Desmond League round-up: Rathkeale defeat Glin in Premier Division League Cup Final

Rathkeale

INSPIRED by skipper Jack Hennessy last Friday night, Rathkeale lifted the first junior trophy of the season with a deserved two one win over Glin Rovers in the Desmond League Premier Division League Cup Final.

They opened the scoring on twenty five minutes when a Gary Enright corner was flicked on by Timmy Hogan for Sean O’Shea to score from close range. It looked like Pa Wilmott had doubled their lead three minutes later when he latched onto a Mikey Morrissey ball over the top and placed it past Glin keeper Michel Stack but the officials deemed the ball didn’t cross the line.

Five minutes from half time Glin were level when Ajay Behan hit a screamer into the roof of the net to leave it a; square at the break.

The second half saw Rathkeale dominate possession with keeper Aaron Hogan rarely troubled. However, it wasn’t until five minutes from time that Rathkeale got some breathing space when a Dean Maune cross was met by a bullet of a header from skipper Jack Hennessy which nestled in the bottom corner.

There was nothing between the sides in the first-half with chances few and far between. For Ferrybank Victor Madeuwesi drew a good save from Abbeyfeale net minder Billy Quirke while Aaron Stenson blazed over from fourteen yards when the ball was headed down to him from a corner.

Ferrybank were the better team in the third quarter and deserved to open the scoring on sixty eight minutes. The breakthrough came when Victor Madeuwesi delivered a defence-splitting pass to centre-forward Meshac Baratu who kept his composure to drill the ball past Billy Quirke. Ferrybank held onto their lead without any major scares, though Abbeyfeale did apply a lot of pressure in the last ten minutes or so. The Waterford side could have doubled their lead in injury-time but for a brilliant tackle by right-back Conor Mullane to deny Stephen Imiron.
