The Junior South of Ireland Tennis Championships which commenced in 1959 at Limerick Lawn Tennis Club continues this week at the famous Limerick grounds.

The aim of the Championships, which run until Saturday afternoon, are to give children from the age of 8 - 18 an incentive to win a major title and to nurture their talent, enthusiasm, hopes and aspirations to become top achievers in the sport of tennis.

Former stars of the junior tournament have gone on to greater deeds including Conor Niland (Wimbledon and US Open, now Irish Davis Cup Captain, highest World Ranking 129);   Sam Barry (played in all 4 Junior Grand Slams, Senior Australian Open, now ranked on the senior circuit, member Irish Davis Cup Team); Anne Niland and Anne Fleming (Irish Federation Cup Team);   Brendan and Anne Bradshaw, Eugene Mulland, Deirdre Collins, Jennifer Ann Mulholland (Irish International Team, Irish International Veterans Teams);   Fiona Long, Simon McGee, Will and Micheal O'Callaghan -  a few of our Irish Champions all of whom played at the Junior South of Ireland.

The SOI Championships is the first Grade One Category Junior Tournament of the annual Tennis Calendar  and, therefore, an important fixture for the top juniors in the whole country wanting to build up their points  as they progress through the different age categories for the rest of the yearly Open Season and entry into the very competitive Irish, European and International Junior Tours.

It will also lead to consideration for selection to the various International,  National and Provincial Squads combined with Regional Matchplay selections.  The Championships average an entry of 200 - 250 players.  These will generally play in 2 or 3 events; i.e. single, doubles/mixed doubles which averages approximately 330 - 340 entries.

None of this would be possible without the generous sponsorship we have received over the years.  We send many thanks to all our previous sponsors and this year we proudly welcome our new sponsor - Limerick's ASYSTEC:

As Asystec continue to spread their wings and their workforce internationally, the company's headquarters remain in Raheen Limerick, frequently supporting local sporting individuals, clubs and charities in the region. Limerick Lawn take this opportunity to thank Les, Brendan and all their team for their following message: "Asystec are delighted to sponsor the Junior SOI Championships! We would like to wish each and every participant the very best of luck! “
