Five Limerick players reach matchplay stages at 'the South'

FIVE Limerick-based players qualified for today’s matchplay stages of the 115th South of Ireland Golf Championship at Lahinch Golf Club.

The top 64 placed players from the 150 who teed it up for the 36-hole strokeplay qualifying phase on Wednesday morning advanced to the start of the matchplay section this Friday morning.

Castletroy’s Eamonn Haugh is the first of the Limerick-based contingent into action when he takes on leading qualifier Jake Whelan, of Newlands, at 8.12am.

Haugh secured his place in the matchplay phase with a two-round total of 151, including a second round of 72.

Limerick Golf Club’s Michael Reddan will face Luke Donnelly, of Kilkenny, in another of the early morning last 64-games.

Reddan posted an excellent 68 in Thursday’s second round, including a birdie-birdie finish over the renowned Co Clare links.

Castletroy’s Andrew McCormack signed for a terrific 69 on Thursday to go with his opening 77 to secure his place in the knock-out stages. McCormack takes on Belvoir Park’s Marc Norton.

Another Castletroy Golf Club member to advance is Dean McMahon who ended the strokeplay phase with a two round total of 150. McMahon’s reward is an 18-hole duel with Portmarnock’s Conor Purcell.

Forty four-year-old Pat Murray, of Limerick Golf Club, also qualified for the matchplay stages with rounds of 73 and 72. The 2012 winner Murray will face Kinsale’s Cathal Butler in the first round of matchplay.

The cut for the matchplay stages fell at eight over, 152, with Limerick’s Mark McGrath very unfortunate to miss out on progressing on countback. Just two of the six players who ended on 152 advanced to the matchplay stages.
