Chesterfield’s play-off hopes hit by draw with struggling Tranmere

Play-off-chasing Chesterfield had to settle for a point as lowly Tranmere came from behind to end their five-game goal drought with a 1-1 draw.

Tom Naylor gave the Spirietes a first-half lead before Sam Finley grabbed a point for Tranmere, who earlier saw Omari Patrick have a penalty saved.

Kaiyne Woolery missed a golden opportunity early on for Tranmere as he swept his finish wide from four yards.

And Rovers’ goalscoring woes continued in the 17th minute when Kyle McFadzean conceded a penalty for a foul on Zech Obiero, only for Patrick to be denied from 12 yards by Ryan Boot.

Despite the best opportunities falling to the visitors, it was Chesterfield who took the lead in the 44th minute when James Berry’s cross found Naylor, who flicked his header past Marko Marosi.

Tranmere responded after the break, scoring their first goal in over eight hours of football when Finley poked home Patrick Brough’s cross in the 53rd minute.

Both sides threatened a winner but ultimately had to settle for a point as Chesterfield stayed seventh, while Rovers moved up to 20th.nds
