Wigan took one step closer to securing their League One status for next season thanks to a 2-1 win over Mansfield at the Brick Community Stadium.
Gary Caldwell’s side are seemingly peaking at the right time, having picked up seven points in their last three outings.
It was a slow start to the game from both teams, but Wigan opened the scoring in the 25th minute courtesy of Callum Wright, who cut inside to finish inside the area following a lovely through ball from Raphael Borges Rodrigues.
But Latics’ lead did not last long, with Mansfield equalising just three minutes later through Lucas Akins. With not much separating the two teams in the first half, the score was level at 1-1 at the break.
The hosts regained the lead in the 71st minute through talisman Joe Taylor, who converted from the penalty spot after being brought down inside the area by Mansfield’s Frazer Blake-Tracy. Taylor’s spot-kick proved decisive, with Latics holding on to secure a 2-1 win on home soil.
With just four games of the campaign remaining, Caldwell’s side sit five points above the relegation zone and are on track to secure League One survival, should their form continue.
