Flying Limerick FC find it three and easy at Drogheda

HIGH-FLYING Limerick FC moved eight points clear at the top of the SSE Airtricity League First Division with an impressive 3-0 victory over Drogheda United at United Park on Friday night.

Martin Russell’s trail-blazing side made it six wins from six in the First Division to move eight points clear of second-placed UCD.

Goals from Paul O’Conor in the opening half and second half strikes from John O’Flynn and Lee J-Lynch helped red-hot Limerick maintain their excellent start to the season.

Limerick have now scored 28 goals in their opening half dozen league fixtures and 35 goals in all competitions this season with 11 different scorers.

The game could have started out so differently for Limerick as Drogheda might have taken the lead In the 22nd minute, but Robbie Williams headed off the line from an Eoin Kirwan effort.

After an evenly-contested opening half an hour in which Drogheda created a couple of decent chances, Limerick FC took the lead on 34 minutes when captain Shane Duggan played in John O'Flynn. His cross was met by Paul O'Conor, but the 'keeper saved well initially. However, the ball was quickly played back in and headed home by O'Conor.

The Blues maintained their lead until half time and the visitors doubled their advantage in the 56th minute.

John O'Flynn’s initIal shot went across the face of goal. The ball retrieved by the hard-working Stehen Kenny who beat his man and crossed to back post for O’Flynn to score.

It was the striker’s sixth goal in five appearances in all competitions for the in-form Blues this season.

Limerick FC wrapped up the points on 68 minutes when midfielder Lee J-Lynch fired home the third, with a superb strike from the edge of the box.

Drogheda should have pulled one back on 84 minutes, but somehow Jake Hyland headed over in the six-yard box from Donnelly's cross.

Next up for Martin Russell’s Limerick side in the First Division is a home fixture with Cabinteely at the Markets Field on Saturday, April 16 at 6.30pm.
