Joe Quigley came off the bench to score the goal that gave in-form Bristol Rovers a 1-0 home win over Fleetwood.
The striker was brough on early in the second half and soon gave Steve Evans’ side a fourth consecutive victory with a clever glancing header following Jack Sparkes’ near-post corner.
While victory means Rovers’ relegation worries are now just a memory, it was tough on Matt Lawlor’s mid-table Fleetwood who enjoyed the better chances but paid the price for their lack of finishing prowess.
The contest burst into life late in the first half when Rovers defender Kofi Balmer felled forward Will Davies just inside the penalty box but Brad Young came to the rescue when he pushed Ethan Ennis’ spot-kick to safety.
Veteran striker Ched Evans wasted a good chance to score just after half-time when he broke clear following a defensive mistake only to drive his low shot wide.
And after Quigley’s breakthrough in the 66th minute, Young was again Rovers’ saviour as he brilliantly denied Fleetwood substitute Jordan Davies.
