Louis Appere’s goal earns promotion-chasing Cambridge a point at Accrington

Louis Appere salvaged a point nine minutes from time for promotion-chasing Cambridge with a 1-1 draw at Accrington.

Cambridge, who drop to third in Sky Bet League Two with the point, had all the pressure but trailed to a 25th minute Stanley goal.

Isaac Heath’s ball was headed on by Shaun Whalley to Farrend Rawson in the six-yard box and the defender fired home.

The hosts, who had lost their last three games, had to reshuffle their pack soon after with Heath limping off injured before there was a 12-minute delay when Connor O’Brien was stretchered off after landing awkwardly.

United continued to create the chances but struggled to test Ollie Wright in the first half.

Neil Harris made four attacking substitutions between half-time and the hour mark as they looked to get back the game.

Wright’s first notable save came in the 65th minute when he pushed out substitute Sullay Kaikai’s fierce strike.

Kaikai hit the inside of the post in the 78th minute before Korey Smith’s cross found Appere, who headed home the leveller three minutes later.
