Chesterfield improved their League Two play-off hopes with a 3-0 victory over Colchester.
Will Grigg’s 26th-minute penalty was added to by goals from Dilan Markanday and Lee Bonis as the Spireites bounced back from Saturday’s defeat at Barnet to move back into the play-off places.
Grigg, who threatened early on with a header which was saved by Matt Macey, struck the opening goal from the spot after Harvey Araujo was penalised for handling the ball inside the area.
Goalkeeper Zach Hemming protected Chesterfield’s lead with a good save from Arthur Read’s low shot.
Markanday added a second goal in the 39th minute with a shot from the edge of the area.
Hemming made a save from Kyreece Lisbie early in the second half while Kyle McFadzean made a vital challenge in the area to dispossess Romeo Akachukwu.
Sammy Braybrooke and Dylan Duffy combined to set up substitute Bonis for Chesterfield’s third goal in the 72nd minute.
The goal effectively killed off Colchester’s hopes of mounting a comeback as they slipped seven points off the pace in the play-off race.
