Ollie Palmer rescued a 1-1 draw for promotion hopefuls Swindon after Kane Thompson-Sommers’ brilliant effort gave Rovers hope of a derby upset.
The Wiltshire side dominated the Sky Bet League Two contest but heroics from goalkeeper Brad Young kept the struggling visitors in the fight.
Young had to scramble to tip over Jake Batty’s inswinging corner and from that set-piece miraculously clawed away Will Wright‘s point-blank header.
The keeper then clawed away Aaron Drinan’s half-volley on the run after Junior Hoilett had picked him out with a sweeping crossfield ball.
Rovers went ahead two minutes before the break after Thompson-Sommers drove in from the right flank, held off challengers and expertly curled the ball into the far corner.
Robins boss Ian Holloway was red-carded in the 52nd minute for a comment made from the bench.
Palmer nearly foiled Young with a delicate close-range lob but a defender got back to nod over.
However, he levelled with his next effort, in the 58th minute, by drilling into the far corner.
He then tried another lob from 25 yards but Young was able to recover and punch over as the Pirates held on for a point.
