Limerick's Sam Barry wins Men's Futures tennis event

LIMERICK’S Sam Barry claimed a significant victory in the final of the ITF Men’s Futures event in Sunderland yesterday.

Twenty four-year-old Barry defeated top seed Maxime Teixeira, of France in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) to claim his first singles title of 2016.

After losing the first set, number five seed Barry rallied superbly to overcome the Frenchman in two hours and 26 minutes.

Barry had beaten Lloyd Glasspool, of Great Britain, 6-4, 7-6 in the semi-finals.

Sam Barry is set to lead Ireland in the Davis Cup Europe Zone Group Three campaign in Taillinn, Estonia from March 2-5. The team is captained by fellow Limerick man Conor Niland.
