West Brom head coach Eric Ramsay admitted the overall picture is “not good enough” and feels his side took “a step backwards” after they drew 1-1 against Charlton in the Sky Bet Championship.
Ramsay has failed to win any of his eight league games in charge to leave Albion just a point above the relegation zone.
George Campbell’s header ended a 405-minute goal drought in first-half added time but Lyndon Dykes’s 70th-minute equaliser meant it is just four points from 24 for Ramsay and 10 league games without a win for the Baggies.
“We’re not talking about this performance in isolation – we are adding this to multiple draws, not enough wins and not enough getting over the line so it has the feeling of a step backwards,” said Ramsay.
“I know what this situation needs at the moment – it needs wins, it doesn’t need draws.
“The number of chances were enough to win the game but it wasn’t good enough.
“We are lacking a real spark and quality in front of goal.”
Regarding his future, Ramsay added: “I am not sat here on the back of five losses where the team has not been competitive.
“Over the last four league games, the team has been competitive, it’s fighting and I don’t feel there’s a lack of connection between me and the team.”
Albion created by far the most chances, as Campbell’s header was saved and Charlie Taylor and Alex Mowatt fired off target before they scored.
Campbell met Mowatt’s inswinging corner to send a downward header beyond Thomas Kaminski in the fourth minute of time added on at the end of the first half.
Josh Maja stabbed wide, Taylor and Jayson Molumby headed off target and Isaac Price skied over as Albion pushed for a second goal.
Charlton punished them when Dykes latched onto Kayne Ramsay’s through pass and kept his cool to slot through O’Leary’s legs from six yards out.
Albion ended the game on top as Mikey Johnston’s shot deflected wide, Mowatt was inches away from distance and substitute Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba’s volley flew just wide.
Charlton manager Nathan Jones said: “We had a real problem before the game, arriving 30 minutes late.
“It was an internal thing. We ended up walking to the game – we couldn’t get through so the full squad ended up walking half a mile.
“Memories of Brian Clough and his Nottingham Forest team! We can’t allow that to happen again.
“It’s a real coincidence that we were really poor in the first half. That’s why I think we drew, because our levels were so poor.
“We were miles off the level we needed to be in terms of how we passed the ball and competed, and our energy levels were poor. So it was probably a good point for us.”
