Sunday’s briefing: Stags roam wild at Burnley and Tudor period starts at Spurs

Sunday’s briefing: Stags roam wild at Burnley and Tudor period starts at Spurs

Burnley were the big losers on FA Cup fourth-round Saturday after a humbling defeat at home to Mansfield.

Manchester City eased past Salford 2-0 in a match Pep Guardiola found rather dull.

Clarets and boos

Mansfield stunned Premier League Burnley to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time in more than half a century.

The Stags, who sit in mid-table in League One, arrived at Turf Moor on a five-game winless run, but they fought back from a goal down in impressive fashion to claim a 2-1 victory.

Burnley paid for not taking their chances in the first half, with Josh Laurent’s 21st-minute goal all they had to show for their efforts at the break.

Rhys Oates headed in the equaliser in the 53rd minute and captain Louis Reed capped a fine individual performance with a spectacular winner from a free-kick 10 minutes from time.

Burnley were booed off at the end, and boss Scott Parker said: “The game should be practically out of sight first half, we missed glorious opportunities.

“Second half, really poor. We started poor, gave them something to hold on to and from that point never really affected anything. Just a really poor result.”

Pep finds City stroll ‘boring’

Guardiola branded Manchester City’s routine 2-0 FA Cup victory over Salford “boring”.

After benefiting from an early own goal from Alfie Dorrington, City went through the motions before Marc Guehi – who had already been knocked out of the cup this season playing for Crystal Palace against Macclesfield – made victory certain with his first goal for the club late on.

Asked if he was pleased with the performance, Guardiola said: “No. We didn’t read the spaces where they were. With the spaces in attack it depends on how they defend it and we didn’t read it.

“That is the reason why the game was boring. The only good news is we go through. That’s all.”

Tonali double downs Villa

Elsewhere in the FA Cup, Sandro Tonali scored twice and Nick Woltemade ended a 14-game goal drought as Newcastle beat 10-man Aston Villa 3-1.

Villa led through Tammy Abraham but had goalkeeper Marco Bizot sent off before half-time for a ridiculous tackle on Jacob Murphy closer to the halfway line than his penalty area.

Liverpool saw off Brighton 3-0 courtesy of goals from Curtis Jones, Dominik Szoboszlai and a penalty from Mohamed Salah.

West Ham needed extra-time to squeeze past League One Burton 1-0 thanks to Crysencio Summerville’s strike.

The Hammers had another substitute, midfielder Freddie Potts, sent off near the end for a rash challenge on Julian Larsson.

Goals from Paris Maghoma, Benjamin Chrisene and Mohamed Toure gave Norwich a 3-1 win over West Brom, who had equalised through Josh Maja.

In the other all-Championship tie, James Bree’s extra-time header sent Southampton through after a 2-1 win over Leicester.

Tudor period begins at Spurs

Igor Tudor has been announced as Tottenham’s interim head coach on a deal until the end of the season.

Spurs dismissed Thomas Frank on Wednesday after a dismal display in a 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle a day earlier left the club in 16th position and only five points above the Premier League relegation zone.

Frank departed after only seven months following a recent run of two wins in 17 league fixtures, and Tottenham have turned to experienced Croatian coach Tudor in their bid to move away from the bottom three.

“It is an honour to join this club at an important moment,” Tudor said.

“I understand the responsibility I have been handed and my focus is clear. To bring greater consistency to our performances and compete with conviction in every match.

“There is strong quality in this playing squad, and my job is to organise it, energise it and improve our results quickly.”

What’s on today?

The FA Cup rumbles on with four Premier League sides – Leeds, Fulham, Wolves and Sunderland – all away at lower-league opposition, while Arsenal host League One Wigan.

In Scotland, leaders Hearts travel to second-placed Rangers with Celtic, in third, away at Kilmarnock.
