Ruari Paton fires St Johnstone to victory at Airdrieonians with debut goal

St Johnstone extended their lead at the top of the William Hill Championship with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Airdrieonians.

The only goal came from debutant Ruari Paton in the 22nd minute, with the Irishman, who joined on loan from Port Vale earlier this month, meeting Jamie Gullan’s pass with a precision lob.

Both teams had the ball in the net in the opening 10 minutes but were foiled by the offside flag.

Josh McPake came close to doubling St Johnstone’s lead but the visitors’ hero proved to be goalkeeper Toby Steward, who produced fine late saves to deny Chris Mochrie and Lewis McGrattan.
