Nathan Jones hails Tyreece Campbell after netting Charlton winner against Stoke

Charlton manager Nathan Jones believes Tyreece Campbell can play right at the top level after the Jamaica international clinched a 1-0 victory over Stoke at The Valley.

The win – only Jones’ second success over Stoke since he was sacked by them in 2019 – moved the Addicks seven points clear of the Championship relegation zone.

Campbell, 22, latched on to Lyndon Dykes’ header to take the ball around goalkeeper Tommy Simkin and convert in the 81st minute – his third goal of the campaign.

Jones said: “We deserved it – they had two good opportunities and we probably had five clearcut chances.

“I had a feeling about TC tonight. The Friday night game [against QPR] I didn’t feel he was at it. We had a chat about that.

“If he realises how good he is and gets his mental side of it right then the kid can go all the way to the top.

“He moves like a Premier League player – how he controls, shifts and runs. He has all the physical attributes to do that. It’s down to us to bring it all together.

“After the first 15 games we didn’t expect to be in this position but we’ve had games in hand, this one was brought forward from the weekend. I’m delighted and proud of the team.

“After the Millwall game, which we said had to be rock bottom, we have taken seven points and kept three clean sheets. We couldn’t ask for much more than that.

“If someone had offered me the three-game reaction since then, I would have taken it.”

Stoke failed to score for the third successive league match, with Crystal Palace loanee Jesurun Rak-Sakyi clipping the top of the bar in the first half.

Boss Mark Robins was left hugely frustrated by his side’s latest blank and said: “We have got to create and score. I always try to be honest – it isn’t good enough. Things have to change.

“I don’t even think it is confidence – it is having the balls to shoot.

“We give carte blanche to shoot, create chances and get in the penalty area. No-one stops them doing that.

“The hunger and desire isn’t there – it’s missing. That’s a fundamental worry. We’ve got to keep going and that’s my problem to sort it out.

“We are turning down shots and crosses are flashing across the box and the bodies are not in there. Get yourself in the penalty area – that is unacceptable.

“I can talk about the injuries, we’ve got nine of them, it is just ridiculous the amount of people who can’t get through a game.

“If you take your chances early on then you have got to be ruthless. Go and be hungry first and then you can become ruthless.”
