Cheltenham come from behind to beat Buxton and reach FA Cup third round

League Two Cheltenham Town had to come from behind twice before eventually ousting non-league Buxton 6-2 to reach round three of the FA Cup.

The Enterprise National League North side opened the scoring through former Manchester City prospect Tai Sodje, who capitalised on an error from Scot Bennett before slotting low past Joe Day in the 14th minute.

Cheltenham were close to levelling through Jordan Thomas and Hakeeb Adekalun before Day had to save well to keep out Max Bardell’s header as Buxton nearly made it 2-0.

However, the home side levelled in the 29th minute when Adelakun played in Isaac Hutchinson, who applied a neat finish.

Buxton regained the lead before half-time, though, when George Ward headed Connor Kirby’s free-kick into the bottom right corner in the second minute of added time.

Robbie Cundy replaced Bennett at half-time and his deflected shot in the 58th minute made it 2-2.

Thomas put Cheltenham ahead for the first time with a sharp turn and finish in the 62nd minute following Adekalun’s pass.

Hutchinson’s second made it 4-2 in the 74th minute after Arkell Jude-Boyd’s pass.

Ethon Archer made it 5-2 in the 79th minute, two minutes after going on from the bench before Thomas curled in a fine sixth in the 90th minute to round off the scoring.
