Charlton’s match against Portsmouth abandoned due to medical emergency in crowd

Charlton’s home match against Portsmouth was abandoned due to a medical emergency in the crowd.

The Championship game, a 12.30pm kick off, was halted in the 13th minute with the score at 0-0 due to a home supporter requiring medical assistance in the lower tier of the Covered End and the teams were taken off the pitch six minutes later by referee Matthew Donohue.

Fans close to the incident made enough noise to signal to Donohue that there was a serious problem in the stand.

Paramedics attended to the supporter for around a further 12 minutes before they were stretchered out of the stadium.

Stadium announcer Dave Lockwood confirmed the game would not continue at 1.30pm.

“Everyone here at Charlton sends their very best wishes to the supporter affected,” said Lockwood. “We thank our medical team and first responders.

“We will inform when the match will be rescheduled and that will be announced in due course. Please make your way out safely, calmly and in orderly fashion.”
