Joe Garner snatches Oldham a point after late drama against Shrewsbury

Joe Garner secured a dramatic late draw for Oldham as they twice came back from behind to draw 2-2 with in-form Shrewsbury.

After a goalless first half, Anthony Scully put Michael Appleton’s side in front less than 20 seconds into the second.

Scully lined the effort up after receiving the ball just outside the area and sent a shot over goalkeeper Mat Hudson and in off the underside of the crossbar.

Oldham had conceded the first goal in three of their previous four league games and it was a habit manager Micky Mellon was looking to break.

So he would have been relieved to see Tom Pett score his first goal of the season to equalise in the 51st minute, driving Jamie Robson’s cutback down the middle of the goal.

Having looked the team most likely to take the lead, Oldham trailed in the first minute of stoppage time after a defensive mix-up led to Tommy McDermott making it 2-1.

But Garner salvaged a point with a last-gasp header.
