Mason Burstow’s response delights Bolton boss Steven Schumacher

Bolton’s Mason Burstow jumped to the top of the League One scoring charts with a double to sink Peterborough and earn a pat on the back from his manager.

Steven Schumacher heaped praise on the Hull loanee as he fired his sixth and seventh goals of the campaign against rock-bottom Posh.

Burstow’s glaring miss proved costly in Bolton’s 2-0 defeat at Northampton last weekend but the former Chelsea striker bounced back in true style.

“I was absolutely delighted for him,” Schumacher said. “He’s a young player who is enjoying his football here and playing with confidence.

“Last week’s chance that he missed was a pivotal moment in the game, a turning point even, and it would have been easy for his head to drop.

“We put our arms around him and I said on Monday to him that he had to get his head up because he’d score more goals that were going to win us games. And for him to do that immediately is brilliant.

“He put all that straight to bed and keeps his confidence high, which is brilliant. He got us off to a great start in what I knew would be a tough game.

“We have definitely played much better than that and not taken all three points this season, so to do it against a team that I think has good players and pose you a real attacking threat was really pleasing.”

Burstow turned in Cyrus Christie’s cross after five minutes and then finished off a swift counter-attack to leave Peterborough floundering.

Peter Kioso did get his side back into the game just before half-time but Darren Ferguson admitted his side had given themselves too much to do.

“I’m so frustrated with that,” said the Scot, whose side remain bottom of the table with just two wins from their opening 11 games. “For whatever reason we were passive from kick-off. I think they scored without us actually touching the ball.

“We’ve got to find a way of stopping conceding these poor goals. It’s killing us. It’s easier said than done, but we’ve just got to keep working with them on the training ground.

“Two individual errors. They were really soft goals we’ve conceded. And then you’re 2-0 down against a good team, who are very good in transition, with quick wingers, then you have a mountain to climb.

“I thought we should have got something out of the game. Some of the detail in the final pass, the final chance, that is the only area we have really got to improve.

“These final details are really making a difference in the results we’re getting at the moment.”
