Grant McCann issues warning to Doncaster players after AFC Wimbledon defeat

Grant McCann said any Doncaster players feeling comfortable of their place are in for a shock after their 2-1 defeat against AFC Wimbledon.

McCann was thoroughly frustrated by the manner of the goals conceded as Rovers let a lead slip and told his players they are in for a wake up call if they do not produce the desired response.

Owen Bailey put the hosts ahead early in the second half, but efforts from Ryan Johnson and Myles Hippolyte turned the game on its head.

And McCann promised there will be no discussion of the trip to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup in midweek until the issues from this defeat are addressed.

“I said to the players when I left the changing room that if any of them think they’re comfortable in this team, they need to think again,” he said.

“That’s not what I expect from my team.

“I think back to the game at Wigan last week and then again in this one – the errors we’ve made for the goals are just not what we’ve been about for the last 18 months.

“We don’t make those sort of silly errors twice and unfortunately we’ve done it again today.

“Spurs is irrelevant to me at this moment in time. I’m just really frustrated about this one and we’ll think about Spurs when we’ve picked the bones out of this game.

“We need to see where the issues are, where the problems are and we’ll debrief about that.

“As well as the mistakes, we were too safe for too much of the game and didn’t take any risks, which again is not what we’re about.”

AFC Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson praised the resolve of his side for battling back from behind.

“It was a close game between two good teams and we’ve had to do it the hard way, by going behind,” he said.

“To come from behind here and win is no mean feat. This a tough place to come, especially when you do go behind and the crowd is up.

“We were always there but to go on and win it from that position, I’m really pleased with that.

“We’d started the second half really bright and Matty Stevens had a chance when Steve Seddon flashed it across the box but there was that change in momentum with them scoring off a free-kick.

“I didn’t feel like that was coming and when it happens it can rock you. We had to weather it but we came again and that’s not easy to do here so I have to give my players plaudits for that.”
