Darren Ferguson heaps praise on Peterborough matchwinner Jimmy-Jay Morgan

Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson praised striker Jimmy-Jay Morgan for his matchwinning performance in the 1-0 League One victory at Plymouth.

Morgan clinically converted a 31st-minute winner after Argyle goalkeeper Luca Ashby-Hammond could only parry Jacob Mendy’s angled strike.

Morgan’s speed had won Posh a 23rd-minute penalty, taken by Harry Leonard and saved by Ashby-Hammond diving to his right.

Alex Mitchell’s 41st-minute header looked to be in as it came back off the crossbar after a smart save from Alex Bass.

Bass then made a brilliant save to tip Lorent Tolaj’s goal-bound 62nd-minute scissor-kick attempt onto the crossbar.

Ferguson said: “Jimmy-Jay provided two bits of quality – the penalty and the goal.

“It was a good bit of play to win the penalty.

“Harry made a good strike and the keeper made a good save. Harry reacted really well, which pleased me, he didn’t let it bother him.

“Then Jimmy’s done the right thing by hitting it across the keeper for the goal.

“Overall I am really pleased, it was a really good team performance.

“The only way we can build momentum is to get back-to-back wins.

“I didn’t think we were great in possession today but what we did do was show determination and not let a goal in.

“The only thing I am looking forward to now is Lincoln. There’s still a lot of work to do this week.

“We have only won two games of football, now we have to build on that momentum.

“Alex had another good game today. The one with the overhead-kick that he’s touched onto the bar was a really good save.

“The subs came on and gave us a really good impact – they gave us energy.

“Plymouth changed shape at half-time and gave us trouble down the wing so we changed to deal with that and it worked.”

Argyle boss Tom Cleverley said: “The goal that was or wasn’t is not at the top of my list. I was more concerned by the performance.

“We lacked a bit of tempo.

“We didn’t manage the game well enough – when we went a bit more direct.

“You can’t play nice pretty football all the time, sometimes you just need to get the ball into the box.

“Our mindset and approach has to be questioned. We were ‘bookmakers’ favourites’ to win and we didn’t handle that at all well.

“(Our) players are not used to winning, the expectations those wins bring, those expectations are heightened when you concede the first goal.

“To be successful in any division you have to have a good mentality. I’m afraid we came away from the process.

“We can’t lower our levels when we’ve won.

“We need to deal with being favourites and on a good run.

“We had an incredibly young team again today.

“I’ve lost sleep this week about not having Joe Edwards in the side.

“There was a clear lack of game management without him and his experience but it’s something we’ve got to deal with in the next two league games (without him).”
