Plymouth assistant head coach Damon Lathrope dedicated his side’s first away victory of the Sky Bet League One season, 3-2 at Luton, to the travelling supporters.
Just under 1,400 made the trip to Bedfordshire and they got to celebrate thanks to Bradley Ibrahim’s double and Matthew Sorinola’s goal.
To make the result even better, the visitors played the final 40 minutes with 10 men after skipper Joe Edwards was sent off, as was manager Tom Cleverley.
Lathrope said: “It’s huge, I think it’s the absolute least the fans deserve.
“They always travel in unbelievable numbers, they travel unbelievable distances, and we’ve made them wait a long time for a performance and a result like that, so this is for them, without a shadow of a doubt, this is for them.
“I’m sure they will appreciate the effort and the character that was shown in abundance from the group.
“We just did the basics, the desire, the character, I don’t think we for one minute played anywhere near as good as we can with the ball and there’s a lot more in us.
“But we know that if we show that character, do the basics really well, run hard, duel hard, we’re going to be in every single game and we see that today. We see that if we do the basics and the fundamentals really well we give ourselves a chance.”
The visitors led after just 15 minutes when Sorinola was left unmarked to head home Lorent Tolaj’s cross, although Town levelled five minutes later, Brendan Wiredu fouling Lasse Nordas in the box and Jerry Yates converting from the spot.
Ibrahim robbed Zack Nelson to fire the visitors back in front but moments into the second period Luton had another spot-kick, when Sorinola fouled Gideon Kodua, and Nahki Wells made it 2-2.
Edwards was then dismissed but Argyle were able to triumph when Jordan Clark’s clearance rebounded in off Ibrahim with 15 minutes left.
Luton chief Matt Bloomfield added: “Our defensive record since we’ve come in in January has been very, very good.
“We’ve barely given a goal away from mistakes of ours in a while and then three in the same game, it’s very disappointing, very frustrating.
“We gave ourselves a mountain to climb going one behind, 2-1 and 3-2, (it’s) really uncharacteristic to give the goals away and if we give three goals away like that in a game you’re not going to win often.
“We got in the penalty area loads of times, created some really good opportunities and unfortunately for us we didn’t take them.
“We’ve got young players learning the game as well at times and we’ve to give them time to make mistakes and learn from them, that’s part of the process with young players. We’ll support them through that and make sure we get better.”
