Matt Hamshaw keen to see Rotherham improve away form after defeat at Wimbledon

Matt Hamshaw admitted that Rotherham ‘went under’ in the 2-1 loss at AFC Wimbledon in Sky Bet League One.

The visitors were 1-0 up at half-time after Jordan Hugill fired Marvin Kaleta’s cross into the back of the net from close range.

Rotherham had the chance to extend their lead before a Jake Reeves goal and Matty Stevens penalty ensured all three points stayed in south London.

Hamshaw criticised Rotherham’s performances away from home after full-time.

“It was the same as every other away performance we have had all season to be honest,” he said.

“We should be two or three up at half-time but we don’t take our opportunities.

“Then, when push comes to shove, we go under a little bit, which is a huge disappointment for me as a manager.

“It is hard at this moment in time, having just come out of the changing room, to get a grasp on it.”

The Millers have lost all four of their away league games so far this season and Hamshaw continued: “Fundamental in my initial reaction is that it’s just the familiar tale of how our away performances have gone.

“I keep banging the drum about how we are going to change something.

“We are desperately trying to change something and there were a lot of positives from our performance.

“I don’t want that to overshadow it but at the same time it is on me, I won’t go into too much detail but I’ll take that.

“We saw how good our mentality can be [in the first half].”

The victory leaves the hosts in 11th, while the visitors are now 18th, two points above the relegation zone.

Dons manager Johnnie Jackson was impressed by his side’s second-half performance.

He explained: “The second half was really good, really, really good.

“In the end we deserved the win, we obviously had to come from behind to do it.

“We really had to make improvements on the first half and the second half performance was outstanding, to be honest.

“We got two, but we should score more really. We created a lot and had a real energy and purpose about what we were doing.

“In the end we took the game away from them, when we had to defend we did that too.

“Obviously, we had some words at half-time, but nothing too profound or ground-breaking.

“I just felt that we had to bring a bit of urgency and a bit of energy in that first half, for whatever reason we just looked a bit off.

“It was the basics really, the fundamentals, we addressed that and just worked really.

“Credit to the players, the response after half-time was brilliant.”
