Jim Crowley was undergoing surgery on Monday morning after suffering a broken leg and a suspected broken pelvis in a heavy fall at York on Sunday.
Crowley was riding Almeraq in the Listed Garrowby Stakes for his Shadwell bosses when a gap he was attempting to go through closed in front of him, causing his mount to clip heels and come down.
To compound matters Tiger Bay and Trevor Whelan, following tight behind, were brought down too, with Whelan also due to undergo an operation after breaking his leg in three places.
Angus Gold, Shadwell’s racing manager, said: “Jim is not in a very good way. He’s having an operation as we speak, we think he’s broken his leg and pelvis, but we haven’t heard more than that.
“It was a scary moment. It’s too early to suggest who might ride what, we haven’t sat down to discuss anything yet.”
Whelan posted on X, formerly Twitter: “Thanks for all the get well messages much appreciated I’ve broken my leg in 3 places and due for an operation on it as well.”
