Tuesday’s briefing: Alexander Isak and Yoane Wissa force moves in £3bn window

Player power reigned supreme on a chaotic transfer deadline day in which the Premier League big guns continued to splash the cash.

Alexander Isak and Yoane Wissa, both of whom had effectively gone on strike to force moves, got their way with high-profile switches to Liverpool and Newcastle respectively.

Nicolas Jackson also got his wish with a move away from Chelsea to Bayern Munich, but Marc Guehi must return to Crystal Palace after his projected move to Liverpool collapsed at the 11th hour.

Isak in but Guehi stays at Palace

Liverpool completed the signing of striker Isak from Newcastle for a British record transfer fee of £125million – but their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Guehi proved unsuccessful.

Isak has signed a six-year contract and will wear the number nine shirt at Anfield, ending a saga in which the Sweden international effectively forced through his departure from St James’ Park. His move helped lift the Premier League’s gross spend this summer to a record £3bn, according to finance company Deloitte.

Isak told Liverpool’s website: “It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Reds also looked to have done a deal to sign Guehi but despite the player completing a medical, Palace pulled the plug at the last minute after failing to sign suitable reinforcements.

Newcastle sign Wissa from Brentford

Newcastle eased the pain of losing Isak by completing the signing of their long-term target Wissa from Brentford.

Wissa, who like Isak opted to try to force his way out of his former club, has joined the club for an undisclosed fee that could eventually rise to £55million.

He said: “I’m really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

“I’m very, very excited to put on the black and white shirt. I’ve got dreams, I’ve got faith, and now I will do my best to make it all happen. I can’t wait to get started.”

Jackson completes Chelsea exit

Nicolas Jackson’s prolonged Chelsea exit was finally resolved after the club agreed a season-long loan deal with Bayern Munich.

The PA news agency understands the 24-year-old moves on an initial loan worth 16.5million euros (£14.3million) with an obligation to buy for 81.5m euros (£70.4m) on a five-year contract if a certain number of appearances is reached.

The Blues confirmed the news at 10pm on Monday, adding in a short statement: “We thank Nico for his efforts throughout his time at Stamford Bridge and wish him well in Germany.”

Hincapie arrives to bolster Arsenal back line

Arsenal have strengthened their backline by signing Piero Hincapie on an initial season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen.

The deal for the Ecuador international includes the obligation for a permanent switch at the end of this campaign “if certain conditions are met”, Leverkusen announced.

Hincapie made 166 appearances in all competitions for Leverkusen after joining them four years ago and helped them to a first-ever Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal crown in a historic 2023-24 campaign.

United rebuild continues

Manchester United completed the deadline-day signing of highly-rated goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Antwerp.

Ruben Amorim’s side considered Aston Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez before swooping for Lammens in a deal worth 21m euros (£18.2m) plus add-ons.

United also managed to move on big-money flops Rasmus Hojlund, Antony and Jadon Sancho.

The latter ended his sorry spell at Old Trafford after agreeing to join Villa on loan until the end of the season.

Sancho joined United for £73m four years ago and went on to make 83 appearances for the club but his last outing came in August 2024 in the Community Shield. Hojlund joined Napoli on loan with Antony returning to former loan club Real Betis on a permanent basis.

Italy’s Gianluigi Donnarumma was another goalkeeper to arrive in Manchester, joining rivals City from Paris St Germain for 30m euros (£25.9m).
