Rotherham manager Matt Hamshaw fumes after cup exit to local rivals Barnsley

Rotherham manager Matt Hamshaw was left “really frustrated” after his side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley following a 2-1 defeat.

A first goal in English football for wing-back Ar’jany Martha opened the scoring for Rotherham in the first half of the second-round tie at Oakwell.

But Jamaica international Jon Russell equalised before the hour mark and substitute Adam Phillips completed the turnaround with 22 minutes to play.

Hamshaw felt his side could have been 4-0 up at half-time, but was left frustrated that they let Barnsley back into the game in the second half.

He added: “I’m really frustrated to be brutally honest.

“Obviously the fans clapping us off at the end meant a lot to me but I wanted to make sure we beat a South Yorkshire rival that we haven’t beaten here for a long time.

“I felt we were excellent first half – we could have easily been 3 or 4-0 up.

“We have to put people to bed.

“I was really proud in the first half but football can bite you on the backside.”

Barnsley head coach Conor Hourihane was unhappy with his side’s first-half performance, but praised the turnaround after the break.

He said: “I was disappointed with the first half but I get it because it’s difficult at times when they score a goal and go 10 behind the ball.

“Our subs made a big difference.

“I really enjoyed the second half.

“I enjoyed the performance with and without the ball.”
