Limerick Athletics - Weekly News Update

Munster Senior and Juvenile Uneven Age Cross Country Championships

The provincial Cross Country season reached its climax in Two-Mile-Borris, Co.Tipperary on Sunday last.

In soft underfoot conditions, favouring physically strong athletes, there was some excellent results by Limerick athletes.

The Girls U9 kicked off proceedings with Dooneen’s Tara Considence producing an excellent performance to finish in 5th place.

In the Boys U9 Dooneen’s Caleb Cusack was involved in one of the closest finishes of the day as he just held off the challenge of Cork City’s Tom Devereux to take the Bronze Medal.

Both athletes were credited with the same time with the Dooneen athlete centimetres ahead as he crossed the line.

At Girls U11, Crea Moore took a superb Bronze Medal for Limerick AC In a tight finish. She came close to ‘Silver’ with second placed Aria Collins of Tralee awarded the same time.

Limerick AC, further helped by Aoife Halley, Zara Coman and Elaine Considine, were the 4th placed club and qualify for the National finals.

Clubmate Jack Ryan was just pipped for Bronze in the Boys U11 as he came a close 4th with the West Limerick duo of Jack Young and Conor Hayes 7th and 9th.

Ella Grace Osborne ran for Dooneen in the U15 Girls and finished a strong 17th from a field of 79. Dooneen’s Jack Crowley was 18th from 41 finishers in the Boys U17.

At U19 Alan McCutcheon who has been producing very good times this year was 7th.

At Senior Men, there was a maiden provincial medal for Bilboa’s Declan Moore as he finished an excellent third ahead of some very strong competition.

Behind him, Stuart Moloney was 5th for Moreabbey Milers with Declan Guina of West Limerick 7th. In the Senior Women’s
former Limerick County Senior Champion Mary Louise Ryan was 7th for Moreabbey Milers with Rachel Hosey of Emerald 15th.

British and Irish Masters Cross-Country International, Glasgow

Cappamore native Dymphna Ryan was 2 nd overall in the W35-65 race, as well as 1st F40 and part of the victorious Irish F40 team.

Around the Country

Niall O’Callaghan, who had been on the reserve list for ‘Masters International’ narrowly missed out on a podium finish coming fourth in the Sanofi 5 Mile in Waterford in a time of 26:48.

Parkrun
Twelve-year-old Darragh Whelan was first overall at UL in a time of 17:54 with Shona Keane first Woman in a time of 19:27.

Hint of the week: “The S&C process plays a key role in Cross Country performance. Key considerations include muscular endurance, core stability and foot and lower leg strength and stability”-

Fixtures

The Athletics Limerick St. Stephens Day 10K returns on St. Stephens Day at 11am from Caherdavin Community Centre. It incorporates the ‘Traditional Country Club route’ and all proceeds go towards Limerick Country Board’s promotion of athletics in the County of Limerick.  Entries are €15 through Eventmaster or on the day. Tea and coffee afterwards.

The Tom Walsh Memorial 10K Run and 5 Mile walk 2024 takes place on Sunday 14th January at 12.30pm. First 250 entries receive a quarter zip top. Enter through Myrunresults.com.
