LIMERICK’s soccer star Claire O’Riordan will kick-off her World Cup dream later this morning as the Irish team take to the field in their opening fixture against Australia.

This is the first time the Irish women’s team have competed at such a large scale event like the world cup and will be up against strong opposition in their Group B fixtures including Canada and Nigeria.

The game will take place in front of a sold out crowd of 83,000 in the Stadium Australia in Sydney.

All eyes will be on Newcastle West native, Claire as head coach Vera Pauw names 11 of her squad members for the opening fixture.

She has already gotten 19 international caps and will be hoping to add to this collection during the World Cup ‘Down-Under’.

O’Riordan was a talented sports woman before eventually picking soccer as her full-time career.

From her first days in national school at Scoil Iósaf, her goalie days with Newcastle West Camogie and being a huge scoring threat in Ladies Football with the Monagea club it is obvious that Claire has never been afraid of hard work.

The game will be streamed live on RTÉ 2 from 10:30am. Along with showing all the Irish fixtures, they will also be streaming the other 64 games across RTÉ2, RTÉ Player and RTÉ News Channel.
