LIMERICK swimmer Denis O'Brien is set to represent Ireland in the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in the coming days when the tournament starts in Slovenia.
O'Brien is part of a 42-strong Irish party that is travelling to Maribor for the games that take place from July 23-29. Ireland have youngsters competing in Athletics, Cycling, Gymnastics, Swimming and Tennis.
The Mungret Community College student is heading into 5th year when the new school year starts but has a busy time ahead in Slovenia.
The 16-year-old is competing in the 1500m, 400m and 200m (freestyle) events at the EYOF. The EYOF is a prestigious event that plays an important role in the overall development of athletes, as it mimics the Olympic Games model.
This year’s event will see forty-eight countries across Europe participate in the event, with approximately 3,600 athletes competing.
Team Ireland athletes met up earlier this week, where they picked up their kit, and took part in team bonding events, along with their parents and coaches.
The Irish team departs for Maribor on Monday, July 21 and the competition gets fully underway on July 24, following the opening ceremony the day before.
