LIMERICK soccer star, Claire O’Riordan, went back to her roots of Newcastle West Town FC by donning her old jersey during the preparations for the Women’s World Cup in Australia.
O’Riordan played with both Newcastle West Town and Newcastle West Rovers before moving to Wexford Youths.
Her soccer career began in her hometown and the players of Vera Pauw’s squad wanted to send out a strong message ahead of their World Cup bow that they would not be where they are now in the game without the support of their grassroot clubs.
Fifteen of the 26 players in Australia pulled on jerseys from their former club ahead of their training session.
The range of jerseys represented clubs from seven different counties in Limerick, Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Roscommon and Wicklow.
Not only did the players want to thank their former clubs but also send the message to younger players of the importance of playing with their local clubs.
The Irish team begin their World Cup competition this week with an opening fixture against the home nation.
