UNIVERSITY of Limerick hosted the World Archery Youth Championships which featured 60 different countries competing against each other.

The campus was a hive of activity with over 800 archers competing in two disciplines compound and recurve.

With thousands of people making Limerick their home for the week a huge amount of planning and organisation took place well in advance to make sure everything ran smoothly.

One of the event organisers, Adam Taylor, who also previously represented Ireland at a European level, said that planning began back in 2019.

Adam contained by saying that “We saw the event in Madrid and thought we can definitely do this and do it even better. What we have done is engaged the local community and with the help of Limerick, UL and World Archery we have been able to put this event together.”

The event helped team Ireland develop a junior team who competed against future Olympic athletes and European champions which gave them a huge amount of experience.

One of team Ireland’s athletes, Sam Delaney, who is in final year under 21, said it was incredible to have the World championships take place in Limerick.

He said “I am incredibly proud to be competing for Ireland and to have Limerick hosting this event. It is quite cool to see other athletes trying to handle the weather that we are so used to here with strong winds and rain becoming a huge factor throughout the week.”

The championship had 19 different competitions between male and female and also team events.
