Mitchelstown Outing: Our fourth outing of the year, the Brian Chaplin Memorial Cup took place in Mitchelstown GC on Saturday last. Brian was one of the founding members of our golf society in 2004 and acted as the society treasurer right up to his untimely death in September 2020. This was the third running of Brian’s Cup and we had a great turnout with 31 players taking to the fairways in Mitchelstown GC which was in great shape. Results were as follows- 6 *2s - Joe Franklin, Adrian Byron, Kevin Collins, Decky Wallace, Timothy Ryan & Josie Dunne. N the pins- Adrian Byron, Joe Franklin and Siobhain Fitzpatrick. Pro-Am: The STL Logistics sponsored 2023 Pro-Am was officially launched on Thursday last at Newcastle West Golf Club. Members of the O’Riordan family, club members and officers, sports stars and political representatives converged on the club for the launch of this prestigious event. Mayor, Francis Foley – who was performing one of the final functions of his illustrious term of office – spoke in glowing terms about the club and the event. Club Captain, Denis Woods welcomed everyone and expressed his sincere gratitude to STL Logistics and the O’Riordan family for their unstinting support. The O’Riordan family have a long and distinguished association with the club. Mike, who is an honorary life member, has also held down the positions of Captain, President, and Director. He has represented the club with distinction in the National Cups and Shields competitions. The sizable gathering included: Adam Teskey, Cathaoirleach of the Municipal District of Adare-Rathkeale; rugby stars, the Wycherley brothers; Limerick hurling star, Gearoid Hegarty and Tipperary hurling star, Alan Tynan – to name but a few. Seamus Hennessy, speaking on behalf of the sponsor said that STL Logistics were delighted to be involved in this impressive event and wished the club and all involved the very best of luck. The Pro-Am – one of the biggest one-day tournaments in the country – will take place on Saturday, August 19th and PGA Tournament Director, Yvonne Cassidy, is confident that the one-day tournament will attract the top professionals from the 2022 order of merit. Amateurs from far and wide will be chomping at the bit to test their skills against those of some of the best professionals in the country. The format will place three amateurs in a team of four that will include a top professional. Two scores will be counted at each hole and the entry fee per team is €450. Prizes for the winning professional and the top three amateur teams will be presented on the night. A limited number of entries are still available and qualifying competitions will continue over the coming months – details at www.newcastlewestgolfclub.com.
