CORBALLY Utd completed the League and Cup double when they defeated Nenagh 3-1 in the Lipper Cup final on Thursday evening in Jackman Park.

It was hard luck on Nenagh who also finished runners-up in the battle for League honours.

Extra-time was required to separate the sides when the sides were locked at 1-1 on 90 minutes but Corbally got a new lease of life in extra time to run out deserving winners.

Corbally had fine performers all around the park but Eoghan Carr played a captain’s part at the heart of defence. In the middle of the park Daire Cleary was in the thick of the action all evening while Cian Moore had a fine outing, making himself available time and again with an amount of selfless running.

Nenagh’s game plan went out the window with a serious injury early on to their top scorer Diarmuid Fitzpatrick and hopefully he makes a quick return to action.

Darragh McDonnell, Alan Kelly, Dylan Kennedy and Aleks Marinov were prominent for Nenagh.

Corbally took the lead on twelve minutes. Cian Moore was pulled down just outside the box and from the resultant free kick, Daire Cleary fired low into the bottom corner.

It would have been 2-0 minutes later when Scott Connolly crossed but with Moore and Robert Clancy waiting to apply finishing touch, Dylan Carey got a vital block.

Things got worse for Nenagh when Fitzpatrick was carried from the park with injury but they had a bit of luck when the sliding Moore was unable to apply the finish to Bryan Moore’s delivery.

After the break Darragh McDonnell headed off the line to deny Cleary and at the other end a through ball gave Kieran O’Brien a free shot on goal but his volley was blocked by Carr.

The game was back on level terms just on the hour mark. Marinov played wide to Cillian Scully and he crossed to the back post where Kieran O’Brien headed a fine goal.

Extra-time saw Corbally up the tempo and they regained the lead in the first period. Cleary’s free kick was headed at the back post by Clancy. Adan Wallace got a hand to block but the rebound was bundled over the line by captain Eoghan Carr.

With Nenagh chasing an equaliser they were hit on the break when James Kelly cleared as far as fellow substitute Adam Lyons who took off on a great run beating marker and rounding keeper before firing in from an acute angle.
