HURLERS’ GOLF SOCIETY
Captain's Prize: The Hurlers Golf Society, which brings together former inter-County hurlers from all over Ireland, celebrates 50 years of existence this year. One of its founder members was Limerick hurling legend Dermot Kelly, a former Captain of Lahinch Golf Club, who sadly passed away in February of this year at the great age of 90. How fitting, then, that the Captaincy for its Golden Anniversary sits on the broad shoulders of Limerick hurling great, Eamon Cregan. Last Friday Eamon’s Captain’s Prize was played for in glorious sunshine at a pristine Ballyneety Golf Club.
A huge entry of 110 golfers enjoyed a wonderful day of golf followed by a meal and prizegiving in Vines Restaurant in the Clubhouse.
Amongst the hurling legends from all over Ireland to tee it up were Limerick stars Eamon Grimes, Pat Hartigan, Joe McKenna, Frankie Nolan, Canon Willie Fitzmaurice, Kilkenny’s Noel Skehan, Tipperary’s Noel O'Dwyer, Wexford’s Dan Quigley and Galway’s Noel Lane.
The winner on the day with a great score of 38 points was Clare hurling great, Gerry McInerney.
