Limerick kayaker Robbie Geary to take part in World Championships

Limerick kayaker Robbie Geary will take place at the World Championships later this year.

LIMERICK kayaker Robbie Geary has been selected to represent Ireland in the prestigious ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships in the USA later this event.

The ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships take place in Columbus, Georgia this October. Robbie Geary is a member of Limerick Kayak Club and Limerick Kayaking Academy.

He is competing in the Men’s C1 Freestyle class and will be up against strong competition from world class Kayakers. Freestyle kayaking is a form of white water kayaking probably best described as ‘gymnastics on water’.

Participants use specially designed kayaks to perform a range of acrobatic tricks and manoeuvres, usually whilst surfing a fast flowing river wave.

Robbie, who is from Lisnagry, developed a love of kayaking at a very young age on the river Shannon in Castleconnell and is proud to represent Ireland in this competition.

Keith Bickford, senior instructor from Limerick Kayak Club, says Robbie has developed well in this discipline and wishes Robbie the best at this competition, noting that it is a place well deserved through dedicated effort and training.

The first canoe freestyle world championships sanctioned by the ICF was held in 2007 on the Ottawa River in Canada, and the first world cup series began the following year. These events take place biannually on alternate years.

The 2023 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships qhich take place in Columbus, Georgia will run from October 9 to October 14.
