Limerick Athletics - Weekly News Update

Limerick man Ger Cremin who won a gold medal in the USA Masters Indoor Athletic finals in the 60 metre hurdles in a very fast time of 9.03 seconds in Louisville, Kentucky

Portlaoise 5km

ON St Patrick's day 600 runners, including many of the nation’s best, assembled in Portlaoise for one of the country’s fastest 5K’s.

Eoin Everard was the overall winner in 14:36 with 2023 Adare 10k winner William Maunsell second in 14:37. Third was Jake O'Regan in 14:44. The top 11 were all under 15 minutes.

Olympian Michelle Finn was first woman in 16:00 with Grace Lynch was second in 16:21 and West Limerick’s Ide Nic Dhomhnaill third in 16:31. Aislinn Nic Dhomhnaill finished in 17:31. Monagea native Noreen Brouder of Sportsworld finished in 17:36.

Croom Fun Run
A LARGE crowd assembled in Croom for the St Patrick’s Day Croom Fun Run. It was won by Gareth Sheerin in 42:06 with Carol Cullinane second in 42:38, 3rd Brendan O’Carroll 42:41, 4th Katazrzyna Bobka 43:00. Con Mulcahy 48:06, Helen Hartigan 48:01.

Iosla Breathnach 53:19. There was also a Coffee Morning in memory of the late An Bru athlete Martina Power. Well done to Kilmallock’s Patrick Roche who ran his 200th Marathon last weekend in Tralee.

CREA Moore was 2nd in the girls U/11 600m at last weekend’s Munster Indoor Championships

Athletics Ireland Volunteer Awards
Joe Chawke has been recognised by Athletics Ireland for his service to athletics in Limerick for more than for decades.
A member of West Limerick AC and currently Dooneen AC, Joe has contributed as a Coach, Athlete , Chairman , Sponsor and various other roles.

Also if someone needs a lift Joe will do his best to ensure they get one. Joe IS a very worthy recipient of this award which he will receive at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Blanchardstown this coming Friday. Well done Joe.

Fixtures
NEXT weekend see’s the Limerick County 4 Mile Road Championships taking places for the third year in a row in Dromcollogher.

West Limerick are hosts with Men and Women starting together at 12 o’clock.

First held in 1957 the inaugural winner was Sean O’Sullivan with Joe Chawke the 2002 winner. The Women’s event was added in 1969 and was won by 13 year old Rose Shanahan of St. Patricks.

The Indoor Season concludes with the National Juvenile Championships in Athlone over weekends of 25th March and 1st April.
The Michal Rejmer 10 Mile takes place on Sunday 16th April starting and finishing at Limerick Racecourse. Entry is €25 via Eventmaster.

Details have been announced of the Michael ‘Curley’ Cunningham 4 Mile which will this year be held on Friday 12th May at 19:30 in Galbally.
