North Munster Schools Cross Country Championship
HOSTED by Salesians College Pallaskenry athletes swapped their club for school singlets as they sought to qualify for the Munster Finals in Waterford on February 24.
Best overall Limerick performer was Ella Grace Osborne who was second Minor Girl for Laurel Hill Cholaiste and qualified for the Munster showpiece. Laurel Hill also helped by Catherine McCutcheon, Emma NíDheorain, Charlotte NicPheadair, Béibhinn Collins and Róisín Doyle took the Bronze Medal on 40 Pts.
Faye Moore was 7th in the same race for Limerick ET. Ardscoil were second placed Senior Boys team on 33pts with Rian McNamara and Fionn O’Brien their best placed finishers in 6th and 7th. At Senior, Ebony Gorski and Gillian Dooley were 6th and 7th for John the Baptist Hospital.
In the Boys section, Fionn Cunningham was 7th Junior for city based Gaelcholaiste Luimnigh with Rowan Collins and Rian Horgan 8th and 9th for Ardscoil Ris. At Minor best Limerick finisher was Eoghan Murnane from John TB Hospital in 7th.
At Intermediate Aaron Angland was 4th for Hazelwood Drom. with Dooneen pair Jack Crowley and Alan McCutcheon -just back from illness 15th and 19th for Limerick ETSS and Crecent respectively.
At Senior Rian McNamara, Fionn O’Brien and Danile Scully were 6th, 7th and 8th for Ard Scoil Ris. Oisin Fall was 9th for ‘Hospital’ with Sam Kinsella (11th) and Cillian Moore 13th completing the Limerick qualifiers.
National Masters Indoor Championships
Held in the TUS International Arena Athlone plenty of ‘metal’ made its way to Shannonside. Among the hightlights were Dooneen’s Shane O’Sullivan who saw off stiff competition to win the Men’s O40 400m in 54.95.
There was a West Limerick ‘1-2’ in the M40 3000m with Aogan MacDomnhnaill (8:48.19) taking Gold from Niall O’Callghan (9:00.59). Dymphna Ryan of Dundrum took Silver in the F40 1500m (4:41.16) with the legendary Carmel Mac Domhnaill second in F65 1500m and 3rd in the 400m.
Tim Ryan took the M60 400m Gold in 1:03.27. Derek Kiely Limerick A was C 3rd M40 in the 1500m with Gary Egan An Brú AC 2nd M45 men over the same distance. Ger Cremin of An Ríocht proved unstoppable over the 60mh winning in 9.12 secs
Dungarvan 10 Mile
Several Limerick athletes made the trip to Waterford for this popular event. Best placed was Murroe native Shona Keane who challenged the Women’s leaderboard, home in 1:02:39.
Behind her were Dooneen colleagues Sinead McDermott (1:05:51) Joe Chawke 1:06:20 , Mike Griffin 1:09:36, Kate Twohig 1:12:24 and Marcella McGrath 1:18:14.
Well done also to Noel Fitzgerald (1:06:15) Gerard Hannon (1:25:04 ) and Ann Gilvarry (1:37:20) - all West Limerick. William Maunsell was the clear winner in 49:52 with Mary Mulhare first woman in 55:46.
Elsewhere:
Well done to Kilmallock AC’s Charlie Smith who ran the Doneraile 5K in 26.50, just ahead of his father Keith.
