Limerick Athletics - Weekly News Update

Athletics Ireland Indoor Games

THIS event at TUS Athlone provides an opportunity for high quality competition on home soil in preparation for the forthcoming National Championships.

Leagh Moloney was second in the Long Jump in 5.06 and also secured Silver in the Triple Jump clearing 10.74m. Jamie Mitchell Emerald was 2nd in his 400m heat 50:27. Clubmate Nathan Sheehy Cremin was 2nd in the 1500m in 4:03.50

Run Clare

There was rich pickings for Limerick athletes at the Run Clare, Lisdoonvarna 5K. In the Men’s race Aogan MacDomhnaill romped to victory in a time of 15:59, well clear of second placed Gary Scully (16:18).

The Women’s race was won by Katie McElroy in 20:05 but second and third positions on the podium were both occupied by Limerick women.

Dooneen’s Eadaoin Hennessey and An Bru’s Kate Bobka both clocked 20:08 with the Dooneen athlete just shading it. 11th Liam McMahon (Bilboa) 19:51, 18th overall Jerry Curtin (West Limerick) 20:27, Pat Halpin (Country Club) 24:47

Around the Country

An Bru’s Niall Shanahan was 9th overall and 1st M40 at the prestigious Raheny 5 Mile in a time of 24:28. Other times included Declan Guina 26:23, Killian Lynch 27:03, Sorcha Nic Domhnaill 27:05, Killian Lynch 29:30 and Carmel MacDomhnaill 40:50

Kate Murray added to her growing haul of silverware by winning the women’s race in the Kerins O’Rahilly GAA Club 10K in Tralee. Clubmate Karl Lenihan was 3rd overall with Fiona Mulcahy also ‘WL’ 1st lady 5K in a time of 23:08.

At the AAI Games Dooneen’s Victoria Amiadamen ran in 4 x 400m and finished 3rd.

Parkrun

MIKE Carmody, now with Ennis Track, produced one of the fastest Parkruns ever in Limerick clocking 16:14 as he left the field trailing in his wake at UL.

June 1976

Newly formed Dooneen AC from the Munget-St Pauls parishes made their debut at the County BLOE Championships at Plassey winning many individual titles. They also held a ‘flag day’ with the aim of funding equipment for the club.
Adare native and former St Munchins College pupil Niall O’Shaughnessy ran a career best time of 3:56.9 secs for the Mile at Wichita Texas. The Arkansas University student moved to third place on the all-time Irish list behind Eamonn Coghlan and John Hartnett.

The North Munster Schools Cross-Country takes place Thursday, February 2 in Pallaskenry.
The Milford Hospice 10K takes place on February 12
The Adare 10K takes place on February 26
The Bill Fox Memorial 10K takes place Sunday, March 5 at 10am from Ballylanders GAA Club.
