Summer soccer not on the cards for Limerick District Schoolchildren League

The LDSL is opposed to any switch to a summer season

THE LIMERICK District Schoolchildren League has reiterated its opposition to the introduction of a summer soccer season.

The FAI has introduced a phased implementation of a summer soccer calendar, aligning the football season across all levels,  professional, amateur, and underage by 2028, shifting the focus from winter to summer soccer.

The motion to change the season was voted in by 57% at the FAI General assembly last December.

However, the Limerick District Schoolchildren League believes changing the season from winter to soccer will have negative implications for their league.

More than 100 people attended a meeting at the Castletroy Park Hotel on Monday night to discuss their frustrations about the potential impact of summer soccer.

Various clubs around Limerick listed school exams, summer holidays and a clash with local GAA club fixtures as some of the main areas of concern.

An Aisling Annacotty club representative predicted that their club, which has 1200 members, would no longer exist if this summer season change was to come into action.

Limerick District Schoolchildren League are compiling an email this week that they will send to the FAI to outline their concerns about a switch to a summer season. The LDSL is also looking to arrange a meeting with Minster of Sport Patrick O'Donovan in the coming weeks.

Carlow District League is also against the switch to summer soccer bringing together 21 like-minded leagues across 15 counties, from Wexford through to the Midlands and Donegal. Members of the Carlow, Cork and Sligo-Leitrim Schoolboy/Girl Leagues were also in attendance at the meeting at the Castletroy Park Hotel on Monday.
