THERE will be a “carnival atmosphere” in the city centre during next year’s Ryder Cup, with a fan zone for people who cannot get tickets for Adare.

The huge tournament is now just 18 months away, with thousands of people set to come to the region, and attendance at Adare Manor itself to hit up to 65,000 people a day.

Speaking at a special event at Adare’s village hall, Tom Enright, project director of Ryder Cup 2027, said focus is also being put on the city centre.

“We are looking at developing a fan zone in the city. Not everybody will be able to get access to a ticket (to the golf). The demand for tickets will be high. But what we want is for people, particularly in Limerick, to be able to experience the Ryder Cup, to feel part of it, and enjoy the whole atmosphere that is going be here and the excitement with it coming,” said Mr Enright.

He said it’s likely there will be one large fan zone, rather than multiple areas of the city centre cordoned off.
“It’d be easier to manage from a crowd-control point of view and so on,” he explained.

Asked on the location of any fan park, Mr Enright said no decision had yet been made.

“We’ve seen in the past where Pery Square has worked very well for homecomings for the All-Ireland teams.

“It will depend on what size of crowd that there will be, how many fans will be put in place,” the former Limerick council official pointed out.
