A RYDER Cup in Ireland and particularly one at Adare Manor has been hailed as the perfect way to celebrate the event’s centenary in 2027 by Guy Kinnings, the European Tour Group's chief executive officer.
The competition in County Limerick will be the second time the Ryder Cup has been contested in Ireland after Ian Woosnam led Europe to a thumping win over the Americans at The K Club in 2006.
And it is perfect timing for the Emerald Isle coming, as it does, exactly 100 years since the first match was played at Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts in 1927.

“The Ryder Cup in ‘06 was amazing, brilliant. The K Club, the crowds, Clarkey [Darren Clarke] - all of that,” recalled Mr Kinnings.
“From the moment we announced that Adare Manor would be hosting the 2027 match, there has been this excitement building in the whole island of Ireland.”
Referring to Rory McIlroy finishing with an eagle to force a play-off then winning the Amgen Irish Open this year, he added: “You saw Rory at The K Club this year. I mean, those crowds and what he did there and seeing all the kids there with their parents when he did his stuff was fantastic.
“We always knew we were going to a great place in ‘27 and the Irish, of course, are so steeped in the history of the Ryder Cup.
“I mean, it’s always an Irishman who holes the winning putt! Shane (Lowry, who holed the crucial putt at Bethpage Black) was just taking the mantle on from about another six other guys after Darcy (Eamonn Darcy, who delivered a crucial point as he beat Ben Crenshaw in Europe’s 1987 win at Muirfield Village) started it,” outlined Mr Kinnings.
“In a sense, it is great in the centenary of the Ryder Cup for it to be going to Ireland with all the history of the event and the fact you know you are going to somewhere you will have wonderful local crowds and there will be smiles on their faces and they’ll have fun.”
He continued: “They will be funny, as they were in Rome. I worry about banter as a word as sometimes it’s an excuse for something else, but what it is is the humour that adds to the experience. Just look at Rome, where the two sets of crowds were singing together - ‘left side, right side’ - and then going out on the course and hearing some of those funny songs.
“I think if it is done in the right way then the players react to it the right way. I am really looking forward to Ireland for lots of reasons, but that is definitely one of them.”
