Bruff RFC to re-form women's adult rugby team

THERE was an extra air of excitement in Kilballyowen for the large number of girls from the Bruff RFC underage section who gathered before the recent men’s Energia All-Ireland League home match against Instonians.

The girls had gathered to support the men’s XV, but also to receive a supply of kit kindly sponsored by Tom Coleman, TOCO Welding Limited, Brian O’Leary, Bruff RFC club member and Eoin Cahill, CA Sports.

Bruff RFC now boasts 115 registered girls from under 10 to under 18.5 and each girl received maroon shorts, high tech t-shirt and wet-top.

In early September some of the players' mothers approached one of the coaches to enquire about changing from the traditional white shorts to allow the girls to play freely and with more confidence throughout their menstrual cycle.

The club executive were more than happy to support this change and with the sponsorship it has allowed each girl to receive new shorts cost free.

Bruff RFC has always had a substantial youth section and girls have been present since 2014 when Joe Kelly and Heidi van Schayk started with a fledgling 10 to 20 cohort of enthusiastic girls.

With numbers now reaching more than 100 and girls transitioning from U18s to adult rugby, the decision has been made to re-form an adult women’s team, which had been previously in existence.

The club is totally behind supporting an adult women’s team and have recently received a substantial sports capital grant to build new changing facilities to accommodate it’s women and girls section.

The girls currently playing at Bruff come from a large geographical area including Bruff, Bruree, Hospital, Herbertstown, Charleville, Croom, Cappamore, Fedamore, Galbally, Donnerail, Kilmallock, Effin, Cullen, Clarina, Kilross and Emly and it is hoped other enthusiastic adult women will now venture to Bruff each Friday evening in May to GiveItATry sessions for adults.

The sessions will run from 7pm to 8pm and no experience is necessary. The club hopes to enter an adult women’s team in the Munster Development League next autumn. Contact Liz Kavanagh on 0838124281 with any queries.
