CRESCENT College Conprensive and St Munchin's face off in a fascinating Munster Schools Junior Cup quarter-final at Thomond Park this afternoon.
St Munchin's lost out to Castletroy College in an enthralling play-off for the semi-finals, going down on an 18-16 scoreline thanks to a late penalty from full-back Robbie Widger.
Munchin's had started the game on a positive note via an Oisin Madden penalty. The same man got another after a converted Castletroy try but Munchin's struggled at times and trailled 15-6 early in the second half.
However, a third Madden penalty and a Daniel Foley try saw Munchin's suddenly get back into the contest. The Munchin's out-half then nailed the conversion to put his side ahead, before Widger's intervention
Crescent reached this stage after a 33-26 victory over CBC earlier this month. Fionn Rowsome starred for the Darragh O'Brien coached Crescent with some excellent creativity and kicking from the tee.
Ryan Scanlon and Gerry Joyce caught CBC on the hop early in that game, while Adedamola Obasa, Gavin Tobin and Cian Enright also crossed for five-pointers.
Both Crescent and St Munchin's have won the Munster Schools Junior Cup on seven occasions. Crescent's last win came in 2-16, while Munchin's shared the 2020 trophy with CBC after the final did not take place due to Covid.
The game today at Thomond Park takes place at 1:30pm. The other semi-final between Ardscoil Ris and Rockwell College is on at Musgrave Park at 2:15pm.
