A €350,000 donation from the JP McManus Benevolent Fund has helped a housing and homelessness charity open a new centre in Limerick.

Threshold has unveiled its new regional office at Steamboat Quay at the city centre’s riverside.

It will serve as a central hub for its service team across the Mid-West providing support to tenants to give access to their rights.

Mayor John Moran cut the ribbon at the new facility, with the opening also attended by Helen O’Donnell, who is a member of the JP McManus Benevolent Fund’s board.

The office will allow face-to-face appointments for people who may need the support of Threshold.

Up to now, the charity’s nearest office was in Cork.

The money from the fund allowed the charity to purchase the unit.

In addition to offering appointments at their new office, Threshold will also continue to hold their weekly outreach services in the Citizens Information Centre nearby in Henry Street.

Ms O’Donnell said: “We are proud to contribute to the important advice and advocacy work that Threshold do in the area of renters’ rights to ensure families and individuals can remain in their homes - not only in Limerick, but across the Midwestern region. Threshold is unique in the services and supports that it provides for this sector, and by contributing to its footprint in the region, we can be sure that more renters will be able to access the support they need to stay in their homes.”

Threshold chief executive John-Mark McCafferty added: “This office will allow us to provide even more direct support to tenants in Limerick and the wider MidWest region.”

The office formally opened to the public this Tuesday, with public consultations by appointment.
