American buyers eye up €795,000 historic Limerick home built in 1863

Eight-bedroom Shanacloon, Castleconnell was built around 1863 and may have been designed by the Limerick architect William Edward Corbett

A HOLLYWOOD power couple purchased a beautiful home in Castleconnell last year and now more Americans are interested in settling in the picturesque village.

Sherry FitzGerald Limerick have brought Shanacloon - an imposing two storey double fronted residence in the heart of Castleconnell Village - to the market.

Ailbhe O’Malley, director of Sherry FitzGerald Limerick, said the eight-bedroom home was built around 1863. It may have been designed by the Limerick architect William Edward Corbett.

“It's a very, very fine house and incredibly well-located right in the middle of Castleconnell village. You have a dual entrance - the main entrance is onto Castle Street and you also have the rear entrance so there's huge potential there for a new buyer,” said Ms O’Malley.

The property is set on 1.6 acres with original stables and outbuildings suitable for a variety of uses.

“It's like a country home but yet you walk out your gate and you're right in the middle of the village. It's got that scale and proportion of a country home when you're in it and a beautiful sweeping driveway leading up to it,” said Ms O’Malley.

The experienced selling agent said it is rare to see a period home in such good condition, on top of its long and storied history.

“It really feels like that when you're in it - it's very atmospheric. It has got beautiful rooms with beautifully intact period features which is rare. Very often you go into those houses and somebody has stripped them out at some point over the years. This house has remained remarkably intact,” said Ms O’Malley, who adds that it is has been lovingly maintained by the current owners.

The period features include timber sash windows,  limestone sills, high ceilings with cornicing and original fireplaces to name a few.

Shanacloon only came on the market earlier this month but already her phone has been ringing and email pinging.

“We have local and international interest. We've had viewings already. We've two American buyers of Irish heritage that are very much in the mix currently and I think what happened yesterday has only accelerated their desire to come back,” said Ms O’Malley, who spoke to the Leader the day after Donald Trump was elected president of the United States.

She says the majority of interest has been from buyers who see it as a family home but there are other options like a boutique hotel, cookery school or restaurant and guesthouse.

Ms O’Malley said the vendors are longtime residents of Castleconnell, love the area and are letting Shanacloon go with great sadness.

“They understand it's an opportunity now for somebody new to come in and  put their stamp on it,” said Ms O’Malley.

The accommodation comprises of  a hallway, drawing room, dining room, family room, kitchen / breakfast room, utility, shower room, eight bedrooms, family bathroom, outbuildings, and stables. The asking price is €795,000
