HOMEOWNERS in County Limerick who are dealing with rodent infestations as a result of vegetation clearing for the new Limerick to Foynes railway line are still awaiting clarity on financial compensation, it has been claimed.
The issue was raised by Social Democrats councillor Elisa O’Donovan at the February meeting of the local authority’s Transport Strategic Policy Committee.
Cllr O’Donovan highlighted the long-standing issues arising from the ongoing development of the Foynes freight line during a discussion on Irish Rail’s rail strategy plans for Limerick.

She noted that despite objections at the time, the new Limerick–Foynes rail line received a planning exemption for vegetation clearance.
She outlined that the clearance of vegetation had displaced local wildlife, which then “found refuge in local estates,” resulting in a number of homes having to deal with rodent infestations.
Cllr O’Donovan said a motion passed - in October 2024 - at a meeting of the Metropolitan District of Limerick, called on Irish Rail to provide financial compensation to residents who had been impacted by rodent infestations linked to vegetation clearance.
At the time, councillors were told the local authority would send a letter to Irish Rail regarding the matter.
At the February meeting of the SPC, she said she is now seeking an update, adding: “Irish Rail has not responded to me.”
In reply, Cian Lynch, regional manager for Irish Rail Capital Investments Department in Limerick, who was present at the trategic Policy Committee. meeting, assured councillors that he would follow up with Irish Rail regarding the compensation matter.
