Full funding secured for new Limerick fire station, paving way for construction

FULL funding has now been secured for the long-awaited development of a new fire station in Cappamore, clearing the way for construction to begin on a modern, purpose-built facility for the village and wider east Limerick area.
The project had faced uncertainty after initially being allocated only partial funding, leaving it in danger of slipping down the national priority list.
Following sustained engagement at national level and a detailed case made by Limerick City and County Council, approval has now been granted for the full capital investment, allowing the scheme to proceed.
The development will include the construction of a new three-bay station, along with upgraded training rooms, offices and welfare facilities.

Elements of the existing building will also be converted and incorporated into the overall layout.
The current accommodation has long been regarded as substandard, with councillors noting that firefighters have been operating in conditions that no longer meet modern operational or safety standards.

Members were told that the new station will significantly improve working conditions for personnel, provide better space for training and equipment, and enhance the overall capacity of the service to respond to emergencies across the region.
Councillors from across the district welcomed the announcement, describing it as a major boost for Cappamore and east Limerick.
They paid tribute to the work of the fire service and to the efforts made to secure the funding, highlighting the importance of investing in frontline emergency infrastructure.
The project was described as a positive step not only for operational readiness, but also for firefighter welfare, with councillors noting that modern facilities make a significant difference to those who serve on the front line every day.
