Social housing scheme planned for Limerick suburb

LIMERICK City and County Council are planning a new social housing development in Raheen.

A three-to-five storey complex in a U-shape is being earmarked to be located at Ballycummin Road in the suburb.

It’s proposed there will be 20 residential units.

One five-bedroom “community unit” apartment is planned.

On top of this, another ground floor home is proposed.

Elsewhere, nine two-bed units and eight, two-bed universal design apartments will be constructed.

These will be accessed by stairs and lifts.

A community room at the ground floor is also being proposed as part of the development.

In order to construct this complex, 13 car parking spaces at Ballycummin Road will be removed.

However, 15 new car parking spaces and 30 new bike spaces will be provided as part of a fresh entrance to the street.

In supporting documents, architects acting for Limerick City and County Council pointed out the site has been derelict for more than a decade.

The council had acquired it in recent years with a view to developing it, after a previous planning application for an office did not get off the ground.

The land is bounded by the Raheen Business Park, and lies adjacent to the St Nessan’s Church rectory.

It is pointed out the building ranges in height from three storey to five storey, with the roof incline directed in the opposite direction of the church from east to west.

It’s also located more than 22m from any other adjacent residential building.

Since it is a public project, it will be up to councillors in the metropolitan district to either approve or reject the plans.
