Limerick City Special Olympics Sports Club have been selected to represent Ireland at the Princess Grace European Swim Meet in Monaco this October. Tara Loftus, Emma Griffin, Andy Coyne, and Brian Lowe will swim in the 2-day competition to be held on the October bank holiday weekend.

The athletes will be accompanied by Head of Delegation Olive Coyne and Head Coach Diarmuid McGuire. At the club’s recent season opening barbecue, held at the Seven Sisters pub in Kildimo, Mayor of Limerick John Moran presented the travelling party with specially designed polo shirts. Mayor Moran reminded them that they will be representing their club, Limerick, and Ireland.

Club Chairperson Patricia Loftus describes the selection as being a great honour for the club. “It is our first time being selected for international competition and is something we are very proud of. The selected athletes are just the lucky ones, we have over 70 athletes in our club and each, and every, one of them would have been deserving of selection. Unfortunately, we can only send a team of 4”.

The costs associated with sending a delegation to this event must be borne by the club. The club are currently fundraising to cover these costs. Earlier this year the swim team raised almost €4,000 from their annual Swim For A Mile campaign. A quiz night will be held on Thursday 7 th November at the Greenhills hotel where along with the quiz, there will be a raffle.
In Monaco the Limerick club will compete against athletes from 28 other countries.
