My Week with Celia: No rain check needed for Runway Street Fashion Show

Throughout my career in the fashion industry, I have learnt the value in being able to pivot at the last minute
IF THERE’S one thing that can be said about the Irish people, it’s that we never let the rain stop us!
As we head into the winter months, the heatwaves have faded away and the rain has returned to our skies once more.
With all of Limerick city celebrating August’s Twilight Thursday last week, the Holman Lee Agency and I decided to join in on the fun and host a fashion show, Runway Street, on the streets of the city.
Our runway was to be the Crescent on O’Connell Avenue, with the statue of Daniel O’Connell and the beautiful surrounding Georgian buildings forming a magnificent backdrop for our showcase of local designs.
Unfortunately, Mother Nature decided to rain on our parade – quite literally!
The heavens opened just as we were getting ready, and we prayed and prayed that it would clear before our models were due to walk the runway.
The rain was there to stay, however, so we had to come up with a plan B.
Throughout my career in the fashion industry, I have learnt the extraordinary value in being able to pivot at the last minute.
Whether it be a tear in a dress, a shoe going missing, or, like in this case, the weather forcing you to change your plans, it’s vitally important to be able to adapt.
And adapt we did!
South’s Pub welcomed us with open arms and invited us to hold our fashion show inside, sheltered from the rain.
We rushed over with all of the clothing for the show – thankfully protected by kindly-donated umbrellas from Re:Story – and got ready in less than half an hour.
It ended up being such a fabulous evening and great fun. I could not possibly thank Libby and Susie and all of the staff of South’s Pub enough for being such gracious hosts.
Our guests were each given a glass of prosecco and got to enjoy the display of fabulous local designers safe from the rain.
The whole evening really encapsulated what these Twilight Thursday and Summer in the City initiatives are really about: the community coming together so that everyone can join in on the fun.
This summer has truly been a special one, with so many amazing events that I have been so fortunate to be invited to attend.
The autumn/winter season promises to be just as enjoyable, with one of my favourite events on my calendar just around the corner: the National Ploughing Championships.
It’s always such fun – let's just hope the weather stays dry!
